Server Information
Here follows some basic information on the box from which (most of) this site is served. Below that you will find some Cacti generated graphs for various, probably useless parameters of the servers and router. There is no good reason for this but to have some pretty pictures on the page! The system has been up now for 3 days, 10 hours and 18 minutes.
The server is a simple beast, custom built. It's currently running a Core2 Duo processor at 2.5GHz on a Gigabyte G33 based motherboard. This is the third iteration of my linux based server box since 2000. The first was an old P200MMX, it was basically acting as a router and firewall with a small website and basic mail server. This was replaced in 2004 with a Pundit-R from Asus running a Celeron D. Unfortunately the motherboard snafued in 2008, the capacitors started leaking and it became very unstable. So this box was purchased, in a hurry, to replace it.
The operating system is Fedora, updated in line with the current stable release with all relevant updates applied. Surprisingly, given some sources you may read, the hardware support in stock Fedora kernels is very good. Having said that this machine is not used for desktop or HTPC applications so various extra hardware goodies may not work (but I don't care!). The system sits on the end of a Be* provisioned ADSL2+ line. Due to the distance from the exchange it only syncs at 9-10mbps down and 1.2mbps up but that's okay for now - roll on VDSL2!
I'm currently considering replacing this, still quite new system with a dual processor Xeon based setup. I've found a nice Supermicro micro-ATX board that would do the job superbly. Given I now play around with a lot of windows applications this is a tempting route given I could virtualise it using Xen or Hyper-V - time will tell.
