Server Information

Here follows some basic information on the box from which (most of) this site is served. Below that you will find some Cacti generated graphs for various, probably useless parameters of the servers and router. There is no good reason for this but to have some pretty pictures on the page! The system has been up now for 28 days, 20 hours and 40 minutes.

The server is a custom built quadcore Intel Xeon rig. It uses a Supermicro X7DCA-L Micro ATX board running Intel's 5100 San Clemente chipset. The processor is a single quad-core Xeon 5400 series clocked at 2.2GHz on a 1333MhZ FSB with 8GiB of ECC DD2 SDRAM. Storage is provided by an Adaptec 5805 SATA/SAS RAID card with four 500GB SATA II hard drives in a RAID-10 configuration. It's networked via gigabit ethernet to other systems in the house.

This is the fourth iteration of my linux based server since 2000. The first was an old P200MMX, it was basically acting as a router and firewall with a small website and basic mail server. This was replaced in 2004 with a Pundit-R from Asus running a Celeron D. Unfortunately the motherboard snafued in 2008, the capacitors started leaking and it became very unstable. So a new box was purchased in a hurry to replace it. That comprised an Intel Core2 Duo processor and Gigabyte Micro-ATX motherboard. It was a nice little system but more power was needed for work tasks hence the Xeon system now in place.

The operating system is Ubuntu, updated in line with the current stable release with all relevant updates applied. This differs from my previous systems which have used either Mandrake or Fedora. So far Ubuntu is proving to be a nice OS with a good suite of tools. The system sits on the end of a Be* provisioned ADSL2+ line. Due to the distance from the exchange it only syncs at 9-10mbps down and 1.2mbps up but that's okay for now - roll on VDSL2!
